Josh Beckett got out of trouble in the first inning then worked his way to victory as the Boston Red Sox beat the Chicago White Sox, 11-3, at U.S. Cellular Field on Friday night.
Beckett (16-5) lasted 5.2 innings, allowing seven hits and three runs as Boston dealt Chicago its 10th loss in 12 games. He is the first pitcher in the major leagues to reach 16 games this season.
Jason Varitek was 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs to lead the Red Sox offense. Boston put together a four-run fourth inning to put the game away then added four more in the ninth for good measure.
Mike Lowell was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two driven in for Boston, which roughed up White Sox starter Jon Garland (8-10).
The Red Sox scored four runs in the fifth after Chicago had taken a 3-1 lead in the third on Jim Thome’s three-run homer.
The favored Red Sox paid -230 on the moneyline (meaning a winning wager of $230 would net a $100 profit).
